Last week in our Sleepy Hollow blog post we mentioned that we've done several one-story renovations in the last six months. One of those one-to-multiple story homes is this beautiful home on Stuart Avenue. Once a tiny, four room, shotgun house this Near West End home has grown up and out.
When planning the design for this home we wanted to make sure it didn't overwhelm the homes around it. Our goal is never to build a mic-mansion next to historic homes that are still full of beautiful charm. We love the original aesthetic of the home so we wanted to carry it over in the renovation. We mirrored the original horizontal siding you see on the porch's roof front throughout the front of the entire house, kept the exterior white, and kept the roof a similar color and material.
On the first floor we wanted to keep the floor plan open with an easy flow. The first floor features a bedroom and full bath, formal dining, a casual living space, and a new kitchen with natural wood French doors that lead out to the back patio. The purchasers wanted to incorporate a beautiful blue patterned tile they had brought back from a trip they took together to Greece. We love adding pieces that are unique to the family to the homes we build so we were happy to add the tile to the kitchen - just had to be careful as there were very few spare pieces! To tie in the tile we chose to make the island a feature color.
We wanted to second floor to feel like a luxury suite but also be convenient for the couple. We placed the laundry room on the second floor between the master bedroom and guest full bath to make trips to laundry room easy - no moving clothes up and down the stairs for this couple. For the master bathroom we created a double headed walk-in shower that is flanked by a freestanding clawfoot tub. We also added the master closet to the bathroom to make getting ready convenient.
The third floor completes the home with two bonus rooms and a full bathroom. We wanted this home to be a place the couple could stay for many years to come, grow into it with a family, and enjoy with friends.
